Building our Lives on the Bible - Jesus Christ (Part I) 08/08/10 10:00
length: 32:27

In our Journey through the Bible we have completed the Old Testament survey and this here we cross the bridge from the Old to the New Testament. It really is a bridge because the Bible is a whole in two parts. One is not complete without the other.

The first 4 books of the NT are the 4 gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The first 3 are called the 'synoptic' gospels because they have overlapping passages. John writes from a very different perspective, a very high Christology and mystical language that would be very familiar to the philosophical Greek culture that prevailed at the time of Christ's birth in the first century Roman Empire.

I want to challenge you to read through the 4 gospels again. There are 89 chapters altogether and if you read 6 chapters a day you'll be finished in just 15 days.

This message, and the next four, will focus on Jesus Christ. This may seem elementary but we can take our lessons from the worlds greatest athletes and musicians who practice the fundamentals everyday! For Christians it all begins with Jesus!

Building our Lives on the Bible - The Return from Exile 07/25/10 10:00
length: 40:38

The theme of this message in our Journey through the bible is "The Return from Exile". Two books in the bible cover this important part of God's Salvation history: Ezra and Nehemiah.

In the Hebrew Old Testament, Ezra and Nehemiah appeared as one unbroken book, closely connected in theme and style to the books of 1 and 2 Chronicles. The last two verses of 2 Chronicles are repeated in the first three verses of the Book of Ezra, probably indicating that they belonged together in the original version. For this reason, many scholars believe Ezra served as writer and editor/compiler of all four of these books: 1 and 2 Chronicles, Ezra, and Nehemiah. He probably drew from official court documents to compile 1 and 2 Chronicles.

These were the years just after a remnant of the nation returned to Jerusalem following their exile of 70 years in Babylon. The return came about after the defeat of Babylon by the Persian Empire.

The theme of the Books of Ezra and Nehemiah is the restoration of the remnant of God's Covenant People in Jerusalem in obedience to his Law. The books show clearly that God had acted to preserve His people, even when they were being held captives in a pagan land. But in their absence, the people had not been able to carry on the true form of Temple worship. Only in their Temple in Jerusalem, they believed, could authentic worship and sacrifice to their redeemer God be offered. This is why the rebuilding of the Temple was so important. Here they could restore their worship of God and find their true identity as God's people of destiny in the world.

Building our Lives on the Bible - Daniel 06/27/10 10:00
length: 33:14

In our Journey through the bible, we come to the Exile in Babylon that lasted 70 years. It's an important part of the overall story of God's children. We'll look at the history of what happened when Israel was taken captive into Babylon, and reach for the big picture in the book of Daniel.

Who was Daniel? Daniel was a Hebrew, apparently of noble birth, who was taken captive as a youth by Nebuchadnezzar when he attacked Jerusalem in 605 B.C. Daniel became an official in the court of Nebuchadnezzar, and he continued to serve later rulers, until the first year of Cyrus 536 B.C.

Although not called a prophet in the book, Jesus referred to him as such in Matthew 24:15. The Bible has only good things to say about him. He is regarded as one of the great saints of the Old Testament

The central theme of the book of Daniel is God's sovereignty over history and empires, setting up and removing kings as he pleases! All of the kingdoms of this world will come to an end and will be replaced by the Lord's kingdom, which will never pass away!

I hope you will read the book of Daniel again or for the first time. It's exciting and dramatic. It brings you into the political arena of courts and kings, supernatural and miraculous happenings and characters; dreams and visions; and striking and famous images (the fiery furnace; a disembodied hand that writes on a wall; a lions' den; and a gigantic statue of a man composed of various materials).

There is a great picture for believers that is painted for us as we see the children of God in exile. Here it is: Even though trials and difficulties will continue for the children of God up until the end -- those who are faithful will be raised to glory, honor, and everlasting life in this final kingdom!

Rev 11:15 "The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ; and He will reign forever and ever."

There is much to learn from this period of the exile and from Daniel and his Hebrew friend's bold faith in God in a foreign land.

length: 37:09

We will reach for an overview of the history of Israel's civil wars and will be asking God to speak, prophetically to us about what "a kingdom divided" really means. Jesus talked about this in Luke 11:17
Building our Lives on the Bible - Psalms 06/13/10 10:00
length: 20:40

This week we take time to reflect on the Psalms.
Building Our Lives on the Bible - Job 06/06/10 10:00
length: 37:47

This week we come to the book of Job. He was noted for his perseverance (James 5:11) and unwavering faith in God, in spite of his suffering and moments of frustration and doubt. Job is a model of spiritual integrity-a person who held fast to his faith, without understanding the reason behind his suffering. He serves as a continuing witness to the possibility of authentic faith in God in the most troubling of circumstances.
Building Our Lives on the Bible - Solomon 05/30/10 10:00
length: 37:03

In our Journey through the Bible we come to Solomon whose claim to (spiritual) fame is Wisdom! His story is found in 2 Samuel 12:24 through 1Kings 11:43. Solomon is the author of the books of Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Song of Songs (Solomon). This message focuses on "Getting Wisdom" based on Proverbs 4:1-13

Building our Lives on the Bible - Saul 05/02/10 10:00
length: 39:21

The subject of this message is "Saul", the first king of Israel. His story is found in the book of I Samuel. Saul's life is a sobering character study in someone who begins well and ends tragically.

length: 41:46

This Topic is "Samuel" We'll look at the call of Samuel in I Samuel chapter 3.
Building Our Lives On The Bible - Ruth 04/18/10 10:00
length: 39:14

This week we come to the Book of Ruth which tells the story of a Moabite woman who married into a family of Israelites. But her husband and all the other men of the family died, leaving Ruth and her mother-in-law Naomi in a desperate situation. Ruth accompanied Naomi back to Judah, where they scratched out an existence by gathering leftover grain in the fields. This led to Ruth's encounter with Boaz, a wealthy Israelite and distant kinsman of Naomi, who eventually married the Moabite woman. Their son became the father of David's father, making Ruth and Boaz the great-grandparents of Judah's most famous king. Read the story in the book of Ruth if you can.
Building Our Lives On The Bible - The Judges 04/11/10 10:00
length: 37:04

As a Church-family we continue our year-long journey through the Bible, following the great salvation story it is, following the children of Israel in their progression as the people of God, carrying the hope and promises of Yahweh in a world that does not know this God.

In the book of Judges God shifts the leadership from one leader (ie, Joshua, Moses) to several leaders that He appoints as "Judges." There are some very interesting and also disturbing stories in this book. In this sermon we'll ask God to speak to us from this era in our history as God's children and that there are messages for our lives today.

Building Our Lives On The Bible - Moses 03/07/10 10:00
length: 53:53

Today's Topic is "Moses" the first of 3 messages covering the book of Exodus. It is one of the most important sagas in the great salvation story of God. Moses is a 'type' of Christ in being a 'deliverer' of God's children. Read the book of Exodus in its entirety if possible. We will cover 3 main portions of the story:

The birth of Moses and the leaving of Egypt (the 10 plagues)
The giving of the Law at Sinia
Kadesh Barnea -- the 40 years in the desert until they are ready to enter the Promised land
Building Our Lives On The Bible - Joseph 02/28/10 10:00
length: 36:38

We are at week # 9 in our 2010 Jubilee year-long emphasis on the Bible.

Today's Topic is "Joseph" the last of the Patriarchs in Genesis. Joseph is the 2nd last (and favorite) son of Jacob and his story is very important in the big picture of God's salvation story in the bible. He is sold into slavery in Egypt and the geography of the bible moves from Canaan (Israel) to Egypt where many years will pass and the Hebrews grow in number and become enslaved as a people for 430 years.
Building Our Lives On The Bible - Jacob 02/21/10 10:00
length: 56:38

We are at week # 8 in our 2010 Jubilee year-long emphasis on the Bible. The apostle Paul said, "Whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that by steadfastness and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope!" Romans 15:4.

Building our Lives on the Bible - The Flood 01/31/10 10:00
length: 45:08

We are at week 5 in our 46 week journey through the Bible. While we'll look primarily at Genesis 6-9, it will be helpful to read Genesis 4-11.
The first 3 chapters of The Bible have set the stage for the rest of human history.
Building our Lives on the Bible - The Fall of Man 01/24/10 10:00
length: 49:17

We are at week 4 in our 46 week journey through the Bible. As we have said many times, the Bible, God's plan of Salvation, can be summed up in three words: Creation, Fall and Redemption. This week, as part of our year-long emphasis on the Bible, we consider the Fall of man. Passages that will be helpful to review: Genesis 3:1-24; Jeremiah 17:9; Romans 3:10-26; Romans 5:12-19; Titus 1:15.

Nothing is more critical to eternal salvation than a clear, sober, intelligent understanding of how desperately fallen we are as a people; how deceitful our heart truly is; how real, strong and wretched is the gravitational pull (downward to our base nature) in the fallen soul of man. Until we know (that we know) how utterly desperate we are, and the consequence of our sin nature, we will never know our need for a Savior; and now amazing is the grace and love of God to give His only Son to save (and redeem) us.
Building our Lives on the Bible - Creation 01/17/10 10:00

This is the conclusion of the series of messages from First John.

Those who are born of God keep his commandments.

Those who are born of God walk as Christ walked.

Those who are born of God don't hate others, but love them.

Those who are born of God don't love the world.

Those who are born of God confess the Son and receive him.

Those who are born of God practice righteousness.

Those who are born of God don't make a practice of sinning.

Those who are born of God possess the Spirit of God.

Those who are born of God listen submissively to the apostolic Word.

Those who are born of God believe that Jesus is the Christ.

Those who are born of God overcome the world.
God is Love 10/04/09 10:00
length: 17:17

This message is more experiential than cerebral, more "caught than taught." Our text is 1 John 4:7-21. It is all about love. There are three areas of love we will be asking God to minister to us: God's love for us; our love for God and our love for others.
Test the Spirits 09/27/09 10:00
length: 38:50

Today's Message is taken from 1 John 4:1. In John's world (and ours) there are those in our midst who claim to have "the truth" when it comes to God and religion. We need to rely on the Holy Spirit to give us the gift of discernment and to "test the spirits to see if they are from God." Our text is 1 John 4:1-6.
Love: the Eternal Command and the Murderous Absence 09/20/09 10:00

Children of God and Children of the Devil 09/13/09 10:00
length: 40:36

Are you a child of God? If so, when did that happen? When you were born to your parents? When you were born again spiritually? How can you tell if you're a child of God? Who are "children of the devil"? John opens these questions for us in 1 John 3:1-10.
Anchors in the Last Hour 09/06/09 10:00
length: 41:41

You don't have to know too much about boats to know that an indispensable item to have fastened onboard is a strong anchor. The anchor is not needed in smooth sailing but there are times when the anchor's sole purpose (of holding the boat firmly in place) is critical and literally life-saving.

Our text for this sermon is 1 John 2:18-24, and verse 18 begins, "Children, it is the last hour!" (there is no exclamation point in the text but I hear it in the aged apostle John's voice. Throughout this passage I hear John lay down anchors. The first is "the Anchor of knowing the time and hour."

What do we know about "the last hour" from scripture? Are we in it? Have we been in it? Is it something in the future? I pray that God will take this word from scripture and seal it in your heart today. May God bless you. Pastor Randy
The Battle with the World the Father Loves 08/30/09 10:00
length: 36:44

As we come to our next passage in 1st John, chapter 2 at verse 15, we read, "Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him." But how do we reconcile that with John 3:16 that tells us, "God so loved the world that He gave His only Son...?

That's Pastor Randy's target for this Message. This is the 6th sermon in the series in 1st John.

If you've been in service on Sundays you know that God is doing something very powerful! There's an excitement in the air and we have so many exciting things about to resume this Fall.

Walking In The Light 08/02/09 10:00
length: 47.52

1 John 1:5-10
Are you walking in light? Are you open to what the Holy Spirit may want to do in your life?
One of the most dramatic word-pictures John uses is the image of Light. What is this light and what does it mean to walk in the light? One way to begin an answer is to ask yourself the question, "Am I walking in darkness in any way?"

length: 31:56

This message is titled, "Whatever Became of Virtue?" the first in a series, "What God Says About Character." We will use this verse from 2 Peter as our main text.
As we know Jesus better, his divine power gives us everything we need for living a godly life. He has called us to receive his own glory and goodness! And by that same mighty power, he has given us all of his rich and wonderful promises. He has promised that you will escape the decadence all around you caused by evil desires and that you will share in his divine nature. So make every effort to apply the benefits of these promises to your life. [And beside this, add to your faith virtue]. Then your faith will produce a life of moral excellence. 2 Peter 1:3-5

What does God Require 05/03/09 10:00
length: 33:07

It was a time of economic recession. The economic prosperity during the previous decades was over. Someone said it like this: Outward prosperity was only a façade masking rampant social corruption and religious syncretism, that is, the infusion of other beliefs into a religion that includes all other religions...
It was a time of war inside their borders and also the looming threat of attack from outside enemies. It was a time when personal and social values were disintegrating. It was time when the common people were experiencing hardships because of exploitation by the wealthy. Dishonest merchants were using false weights, bribing judges, and charging excessive interest rates. Even the priests and prophets seemed to be caught up in this tidal wave of greed and dishonesty that swept his country. Where was God? God never abandons his children. During this time God appointed prophets to bring the Word of the Lord. That's what prophets do. God appointed a prophet for the common people, to the downtrodden, oppressed, and exploited. On behalf of the people the prophet cried out? What can we bring to God to make up for what we have done? And God spoke: He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you But to do justice, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8 Sunday's message is titled, "What does God Require?"

This Easter Sunday Pastor Randy talks with us about two intertwining questions regarding the resurrection - both are vitally important --
First there is the Truth Question -- did it really happen? Did the resurrection really happen? And then the meaning question - so what if it did? What does the resurrection of Jesus Christ have to with your life and mine today?
The Achievement of the Cross 03/29/09 10:00
length: 34:55

But HOW does Jesus actually save us? How does Jesus save anyone? And why the cross? Why did Jesus HAVE to DIE to save us? And finally HOW does the death of Christ actually save... a human soul?

Listen as Pastor Randy opens scripture to answer these questions in this message which is part 3 in the series, The Cross of Christ.
Man's Desperate Need of Forgiveness 03/22/09 10:00
length: 37:16

The Apostle Paul argues (in Romans) that humankind is without excuse before a holy God when it comes to sin. All are guilty; but there is one way to be right with God, through Jesus Christ!

Romans 1:16-17
For I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ. It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes--Jews first and also Gentiles. This Good News tells us how God makes us right in his sight. This is accomplished from start to finish by faith. As the Scriptures say, "It is through faith that a righteous person has life."

Romans 3:22-23
We are made right in God's sight when we trust in Jesus Christ to take away our sins. And we all can be saved in this same way, no matter who we are or what we have done. For all have sinned; all fall short of God's glorious standard.

RC Sproul (on man's fallen nature)
We are not sinners because we sin. We sin because we are sinners.

Please come to the cross. There is no other way to fill your most basic need.
The Centrality of the Cross 03/15/09 10:00
length: 35:34

1. The family is God's idea.

2. The family is God's basic school for instructing children how to live in the world.
3. The foundation of family instruction is the fear of the Lord.

4. Under God both fathers and mothers share in the responsibility of this family instruction.

5. God calls sons and daughters to be submissive to their mothers and fathers.

6. Finally, God ordains a reward for sons and daughters who do not forsake the teaching of their mother and father.
Hope That Never Gives Up 05/06/07 10:00

We'll begin with a look at a scene from John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress when he is captured by the Giant name d"Despair" and put into his dungeon called "Doubting Castle." There is one key that releases him...the Key of HOPE. Psalm 39:7 asks and answers the question: "And so, Lord, where do I put my hope? My only hope is in you."

[Unfortunately, technical difficulties prevented us from recording the entire sermon.]

Living Hope (part two) 04/22/07 10:00

The killing at Virginia Tech University took place in the early part of this week. The message of "Living Hope" continues with the same verse as last week and the additional verse in 1 Peter 5:12 that summarizes the entire purpose of the epistle of 1st Peter. He writes, "My purpose in writing is to encourage you and assure you that the grace of God is with you no matter what happens." 13 things to do in the face of evil: 1) Pray
2) Feel and express empathy with those most hurt; weep with those who weep.
3) Feel and express compassion
4) Take time and touch, if you can, and give tender care to the wounded in body and soul.
5) Hold out the promise that God will sustain and help those who cast themselves on him for mercy and trust in his grace. He will strengthen you for the impossible days ahead in spite of all darkness.
6) Affirm that Jesus Christ tasted hostility from men and knew what it was to be unjustly tortured and abandoned, and to endure overwhelming loss, and then be killed, so that he is now a sympathetic mediator for us with God.
7) Declare that murder is a great evil, and that God's wrath is greatly kindled by the wanton destruction of human life created in his image.
8) Remember that even those who trust in Christ may die suddenly or be killed, but that does not mean they have been abandoned by God or not loved by God even in those agonizing hours of suffering. God's love conquers even through calamity.
9) Trust God for his ability to do the humanly impossible, and in some way, bring good out of it.
10) Count God your only lasting treasure, because he is the only sure and stable thing in the universe.
11) Remind everyone that to live is Christ and to die is gain.
12) Pray that God would incline hearts to his word, open their eyes to his wonders, unite hearts to fear him, and allow His eternal love penetrate their hearts
13) At the right time sound the trumpet that it is Father God?s desire that none of His children would be lost but that all would come to saving faith in and through His Son, and that the window of Salvation is still open.
Living Hope (part one) 04/15/07 10:00

1 Peter 1:3:
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
The theme of this message is that the believer?s hope (in life) is vitally connected to the resurrection Christ.
Easter Sunday: The Spirit will Give Life to Your Mortal Bodies 04/08/07 10:00

Romans 8:11:
If the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
There are two big ?ifs? in this verse: The ?if? of the fact of the bodily resurrection of Jesus. Did it happen or not? The 2nd ?if? is personal and has to do with our own conversion. ?does the (same) Spirit of God indwell us? ?If? so? then we can be assured of our own resurrection to eternal life.
The Greatest Joy! 04/01/07 08:30
length: 37:27
Sermon text.
Philippians 3:4-14:
The greatest Joy a human being can experience is not only the joy of heaven (when we die in Christ) but the joy of resurrection power everyday of our life; the joy of exalting God by allowing His Spirit and His power to shine in and through us!
Two human illustrations: the inspirational life of Olympic runner Eric Liddell and the Apostle Paul?s testimony.
